This page traces the development of the community from the early settlement known as Middletown through the late 19th century. It discusses Alexander Middleton’s tavern, the Vance and Ferree families, early farms and homesteads, transportation across the Ohio River, local trades and businesses, early schools and churches, and the development of sawmills. The page also describes the arrival of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad in 1879, efforts to attract industry, the discovery of oil around 1890, the introduction of electric streetcar service, and construction of the first bridge connecting Coraopolis and Neville Island.
